Paso Robles has a interesting history of wine making and grape harvesting that dates back to 1797 when the first grape varietals were brought to the Franciscan missionaries at the historic Mission San Miguel. It's at this Mission that Father Junipero Serra planted over a thousand vines. From these vines the missionaries created wines for sacramental purposes and a brandy for exporting.
In the 1840s, after Mexico had secularized the California missions, the vineyards were left abandoned until the 1860s when European immigrant farmers came to their rescue. An immigrant farmer named Pierre Dallidet purchased the mission’s abandoned vines and began to breathe life back into the land. In the 1870s more Europeans arrived, and the area started transitioning into the beautiful wine producing region it is today.
